Welcome Aniek Cruz, our newest intern

September 7, 2016

We have been busy, busy here at Sweet Songs Breastfeeding. We've opened new space. We've doubled our hospital grade pump inventory. And did you see that we have joined forces with Maternal Instincts to found the North Tampa Breastfeeding Center?! We are ecstatic and we know you will be too. We are looking forward to an amazing year.

Another big happening around here is that we've taken on another student. Aniek Cruz is our newest intern on her way to becoming the next IBCLC. She brings a lot to the group and we are thrilled to have her on board. Here's a quick peek about herself that Aniek has shared. Say hi when you see her at the office!

My full name is Aniek de la Caridad Cruz Cespedes. I’m originally from Camaguey, Cuba hence the very long Hispanic name, but most people just call me Aniek (pronounced Aneek). When I was 11 years old my family and I moved to the United States and we have lived in Tampa, Florida since. Here, I learned English and went to school to eventually become a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN).

I always knew I wanted to be involved in the medical field because I grew up around health care professionals and I loved the idea of caring for and protecting people. My mom was a registered nurse in Cuba, my dad is a neonatologist (a physician who specializes in newborns), my maternal aunts are both doctors, one of them being an ICU specialist, my paternal aunt is a neonatal nurse and my uncle is an advanced registered nurse practitioner here in the states. They all inspired me to become the nurse I am today.

At first I did not even know there was such a thing as a “lactation specialist”, but once I got into the nursing world I started exploring the different paths I could take to further my career and came across this beautiful and important profession. I have been an LPN for over two years with most of my experience in home health and some experience in skilled nursing. Now, thanks to Mary and Trish I can start this wonderful and rewarding journey in training and becoming an IBCLC. I’m finishing RN school and plan to have my lactation consultant credential within the next year and a half. My goal is to help patients achieve their full therapeutic potential, encourage and educate moms and families about the options they have in their health care.
